THANK YOU!

The DCCR wishes to gratefully acknowledge the generosity of two of our beloved brothers who put forth kind efforts to raise much-needed funds for our Center.  Roy Coloma held a marvelous piano concert at St. Kenneth Church on April 25, 2010, at which a love offering netted $2,350.00 for the DCCR.

Ed Holmberg celebrated his 85th Birthday in May with a party during which he requested gifts be sent to charities, including the DCCR.  Net donations from his selfless offer amounted to over $400.00 for the DCCR.  Why not include wording similar to the following at your next celebration/function:

“Please – no gifts.  Instead make a tax-deductible contribution to:
The Detroit Catholic Charismatic Renewal Center (DCCR), 1390 Quarton Road, Bloomfield Hills MI 48304-3554.”

Statement Regarding Church Teaching on Abortion, Sept. 9, 2008

The … claim that the beginning of human life is a ‘personal and private’ matter of religious faith, one which cannot be ‘imposed’ on others, does not reflect Catholic teaching.  The Church teaches that the obligation to protect unborn human life rests on the answer to two questions, neither of which is private or specifically religious.

The first is a biological question:  When does a new human life begin? …While ancient thinkers had little verifiable knowledge to help them answer this question, today embryology textbooks confirm that a new human life begins at conception. …

The second is a moral question, with legal and political consequences:  Which living members of the human species should be seen as having fundamental human rights, such as the right not to be killed?  The Catholic Church’s answer is: Everybody.  No human being should be treated as lacking human rights, and we have no business dividing humanity into those who are valuable enough to warrant protection and those who are not.

Cardinal Justin Rigali and Bishop William E. Lori, Statement Regarding Church Teaching on Abortionn, Sept. 9, 2008

A Bulletin Brief from the USCCB Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities

Studies published … in the journals, , Call, and Science, offer new hope for advancing stem cell research and therapies while fully respecting the dignity of human life.  Scientists in Japan and Wisconsin used four genes to “reprogram” ordinary adulthuman cells, creating “induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS cells).…

Thus the goal sought for years through failed attempts at human cloning – the production of “pluripotent” stem cells that are an exact match to a patient – has been brought within reach by an ethical procedure.  The technology avoids the ethical landmines associated with embryonic stem cell research: it does not clone or destroy human embryos, [and] does not harm or exploit women for their eggs.….…r eggs.….…

This advance reminds us once again that medical progress and respect for human life are not in conflict….

Cardinal Justin Rigali, Statement on Stem Cell Breakthrough, Nov. 20, 2007

Seven Characteristics of the Work of the Holy Spirit in Charismatic Renewal
by Rev. Francis Martin

1.     The grace by which Jesus is known and loved and recognized as Lord.
2.     The restoration to the church of the Trinitarian object of its worship, including an understanding and love of God the Father.
3.     Strong and joyous praise.
4.     Exercise of the gifts of the Spirit. 5. Real power for holiness.
6.     A desire, not just that the world end, but that the glory and majesty of Jesus be revealed for the whole human race to see.
7.     Evangelization.

We must remember that the renewal is the Lord’s work. To fan the flame means to yield more deeply to what He has already conferred upon us – it is not to “stir up” a grace out of our own resources. We didn’t stir it up at the beginning. We’re not going to accomplish anything by a human-directed repetition of the enthusiasm and excitement of the early days. To try on our own to “stir it up again” is to make a work of God into a human work.

If we will repent, if we seek the face of the Lord, and if we will begin to pray and tarry with Him and learn from Him and repent everyday of our lives as we praise Him, this renewal will finally realize God’s intention.  It will be a glory that no one could imagine.

Think if all the Christians in the world were in love with Jesus Christ and in love with each other, making one unified body, offering light and hope to the rest of the world.  What a possibility for evangelization!

That’s what God wants.  If we yield to what the Lord has poured out upon us, the world will know that the church is truly the spouse of a living Lord.

(Excerpted from Faith & Renewal, Jan/Feb 1994, Vol. 18, Num. 4.  Rev. Francis Martin holds the Adam Cardinal Maida Chair in Sacred Scripture at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, Michigan.  He has held senior teaching posts at the Pontifical Biblical Institute and Gregorian University, and lectured throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel.  He is the Spiritual Advisor to the Mother of God Community in Washington, D.C.)

Pentecost Today

Pentecost Today, a quarterly publication of the National Service Committee is an effective and inspiring tool for personal growth and prayer group development.  As one leader recently wrote, “I find Pentecost Today quite helpful for me personally and a good inspiration for our prayer group.  It contains solid teaching with a strong emphasis on the work of the Holy Spirit.”  Articles in Pentecost Today focus on the Renewal’s Vision and Mission, fruits and charisms of the Holy Spirit, strengthening prayer groups and the Renewal today, and so much more.  Pentecost Today features articles by some of the key leaders in the Renewal.  Pentecost Today is available for free for a year but a suggested donation of $10 is always appreciated.  Those who attend a Life in the Spirit Seminar can receive Pentecost Today free for a year.  Mail your request to: Catholic Charismatic Renewal, National Service Committee, PO Box 628, Locust Grove, VA 22508

What is Baptism in the Holy Spirit?

“What the New Testament describes, with reference to the charisms, as visible signs of the coming of the Spirit is no longer merely ancient, past history – this history is becoming a burning reality today.”        Pope Benedict XVI

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an experience of the person of the Holy Spirit bringing alive in new ways the graces we have already received through our baptism.  And it’s the Holy Spirit coming and bringing new gifts in our lives.
            – Charles Whitehead, National Director of Catholic Charismatic Renewal, England.

In 1967, at Duquesne University, the Holy Spirit ignited the flame of a new Pentecost within a small group of faculty and students – a powerful burst which resulted in the “baptism in the Hly Spirit” and the begibsp; The flame leaped and spread to other universities across the United States and around the world.  Today, the lives of over 100 million Catholics have been touched by the power and love of the Holy Spirit.

AREAS OF PRAYER FOCUS

At the beginning of each Church Year, on the First Sunday in Advent, we are reminded to prayerfully re-assess for what area of prayer each one of us is called upon to intercede. Is the Lord asking you to continue to pray for the same intention as last year, or to focus your prayer in another direction?  See where the Holy Spirit steers you: Youth /Young Adults, the City of Detroit, Family Life/Marriage, Government, Work/Employment, Wars/Terrorism, Drugs/Addictions, Life/Abortion, Idolatry/False Religions, Church, Mass Communication, Environment/Pollution, Light in the Darkness.  We are seeing awesome answers to our prayers in all of these areas. Preparing for Confession
1 John 1:9;   If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing.

Matthew 5:3-10

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,  for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because of me.

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you  (Return)

John 11:25-26;
Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?

John 14:18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.  (Return)

Feeling guilty
Hebrews 9:13-14  For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of a heifer's ashes can sanctify those who are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God.

John 3:19-21   And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. (Return)

In financial difficulty
Matthew 10:29-31 Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father's knowledge. Even all the hairs of your head are counted. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Haggai 2:6-9  For thus says the LORD of hosts: One moment yet, a little while, and I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. I will shake all the nations, and the treasures of all the nations will come in, And I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts. Mine is the silver and mine the gold, says the LORD of hosts. Greater will be the future glory of this house than the former, says the LORD of hosts; And in this place I will give you peace, says the LORD of hosts. (Return)

Raising a family
Psalm 127:3-5   Children too are a gift from the LORD, the fruit of the womb, a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children born in one's youth. Blessed are they whose quivers are full. They will never be shamed contending with foes at the gate.

Ephesians 6:1-4
Children, obey your parents (in the Lord), for this is right. "Honor your father and mother." This is the first commandment with a promise, "that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on earth." Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up with the training and instruction of the Lord.
(Return)

Seeking love
1 Corinthians 13  If I speak in human and angelic tongues 2 but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or a clashing cymbal. And if I have the gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge; if I have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away everything I own, and if I hand my body over so that I may boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, (love) is not pompous, it is not inflated, it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury, it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing; if tongues, they will cease; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing. For we know partially and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I used to talk as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I put aside childish things. At present we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known. So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

1 John 4:10  Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." (Return)

Seeking wisdom
Proverbs 8  Does not Wisdom call, and Understanding raise her voice? On the top of the heights along the road, at the crossroads she takes her stand; By the gates at the approaches of the city, in the entryways she cries aloud: "To you, O men, I call; my appeal is to the children of men.

You simple ones, gain resource, you fools, gain sense. "Give heed! for noble things I speak; honesty opens my lips.

Yes, the truth my mouth recounts, but the wickedness my lips abhor. Sincere are all the words of my mouth, no one of them is wily or crooked; All of them are plain to the man of intelligence, and right to those who attain knowledge. Receive my instruction in preference to silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold. (For Wisdom is better than corals, and no choice possessions can compare with her.) "I, Wisdom, dwell with experience, and judicious knowledge I attain. (The fear of the LORD is to hate evil;) Pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth I hate.

Mine are counsel and advice; Mine is strength; I am understanding. By me kings reign, and lawgivers establish justice; By me princes govern, and nobles; all the rulers of earth. "Those who love me I also love, and those who seek me find me. With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity. My fruit is better than gold, yes, than pure gold, and my revenue than choice silver. On the way of duty I walk, along the paths of justice, Granting wealth to those who love me, and filling their treasuries.

"The LORD begot me, the first-born of his ways, the forerunner of his prodigies of long ago;

From of old I was poured forth, at the first, before the earth.

When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no fountains or springs of water; Before the mountains were settled into place, before the hills, I was brought forth; While as yet the earth and the fields were not made, nor the first clods of the world. "When he established the heavens I was there, when he marked out the vault over the face of the deep; When he made firm the skies above, when he fixed fast the foundations of the earth; When he set for the sea its limit, so that the waters should not transgress his command;

Then was I beside him as his craftsman, and I was his delight day by day, Playing before him all the while, playing on the surface of his earth; and I found delight in the sons of men. "So now, O children, listen to me; instruction and wisdom do not reject! Happy the man who obeys me, and happy those who keep my ways, Happy the man watching daily at my gates, waiting at my doorposts; For he who finds me finds life, and wins favor from the LORD; But he who misses me harms himself; all who hate me love death."

James 1:5  But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and he will be given it. (Return)

Sharing the Good News
Mark 5:19-20; But he would not permit him but told him instead, "Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you." Then the man went off and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him; and all were amazed.

1 Corinthians 9:22-23 All this I do for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it. Do you not know that the runners in the stadium all run in the race, but only one wins the prize? Run so as to win. (Return)

Sick
Proverbs 15:30; Every day is miserable for the depressed, but a lighthearted man has a continual feast.

James 5:14; Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord.

Mark 6:13 They drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. (Return)

Starting to pray

Luke 11:1-13  He was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples."

He said to them, "When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.

Give us each day our daily bread

and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test."

And he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend to whom he goes at midnight and says, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,

for a friend of mine has arrived at my house from a journey and I have nothing to offer him,'

and he says in reply from within, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked and my children and I are already in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything.'

I tell you, if he does not get up to give him the loaves because of their friendship, he will get up to give him whatever he needs because of his persistence.

"And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

What father among you would hand his son a snake when he asks for a fish? (Return)

Struggling with sin
Genesis 4:7; If you do well, you can hold up your head; but if not, sin is a demon lurking at the door: his urge is toward you, yet you can be his master."

Romans 6:20-23  For when you were slaves of sin, you were free from righteousness.

But what profit did you get then from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.

But now that you have been freed from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit that you have leads to sanctification, and its end is eternal life.

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Return)

Tempted
1 Corinthians  10:13;   No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it. (Return)

Trying to forgive
Matthew 18:21-22  A bruised reed he will not break, a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory. And in his name the Gentiles will hope."

Colossians 3:12-14 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. (Return)

Weary
Matthew 11:28-30  "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your selves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light."
